Please reach us at homfencing@hotmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

League schools are those who have paid their dues as set forth in the Call for Dues letter, which can be found at THIS link.

Note that a league school CAN only have a single fencer.

There's no great amount of paperwork involved, only deciding which dues you would owe, advising either League President Greg Schiller or Treasurer Sam Signorelli of your intentions, and sending Sam the money, along with the name and contact email for the coach or school athletic director so they can be added to the email blast list.

Questions may be directed to Greg at gschiller332@gmail.com or Sam at homfencing@hotmail.com

The League defines a novice as a fencer with 12 months or less TOTAL experience.  This means if your fencer took lessons for 9 months...took a 6 month break, and then took 4 more months of lessons, that fencer is not a novice, as the TOTAL experience would be 13 months.  Note that this does NOT mean that fencer cannot have competed before our Novice event...the definition is based solely on time of experience, not experience in competition.

This is important because the novice event is the only time beginning league fencers will be facing peer-opponents.

NOTE ALSO:  Currently, the Novice is open ONLY to fencers from league schools.  Fencers from non-league school are currently not permitted in the Novice event.

Important info re those specific masks from USA Fencing at THIS link.

If you have either of these masks, please note the deadlines in the notice.

SCSFL LEAGUE AWARDS & ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR NOVICE & TEAM EVENTS

  1. INDIVIDUAL EVENT AWARDS:  New this season:    Individual medals will be awarded for top 4 in SCSFL individual events.   In addition, the cumulative points are tabulated from final results in  Individual Events #1 and #2 and Season Medals will be awarded 1st  through 8th place, at the conclusion of the #2 Individual Events in  Foil, Epee and Sabre.  The awards ceremonies will be held immediately  following the #2 individual event competitions in the Spring Semester.

**********************************************************

  1. NOVICE TOURNAMENT  CRITERIA:  The SCSFL  novice tournament is a separate tournament designated for fencers with 1  year or less fencing experience. NEW THIS SEASON: the NOVICE tournament  is for League School Fencers only, or by petition of the fencer's coach  directly to the league administrators.  The NOVICE tournament is  unsanctioned and no ratings will be awarded. Rated fencers are not  eligible to participate, nor are fencers who have previously competed in  any previous SoCal Fencing League Novice tournaments.   (Example: if  you fenced 2 years of epee and decided to switch to saber, and only  fenced saber for 2 months, you are NOT a novice saber fencer.)  Medals  will be awarded to top finishers in each novice event.

************************************************************

  1. TEAM EVENT  QUALIFICATIONS:  All Varsity High  School Fencers must fence in either/or both the #1 or #2 Individual  Events in order to be considered for a High School Varsity "A" Team for  the SoCal Scholastic League Team Tournament.  All fencers must fence in  at least one SoCal Scholastic League individual event or Novice event to  qualify to fence in a Team Event.  Additional TEAM TOURNAMENT  qualifications, team level descriptions & fee info applies to team  events.  Please review the “more info” page on AskFred.net for those  specific dates.

TEAM PARTICIPATION RULES

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE, FENCERS MUST HAVE COMPETED IN ONE OF THE   INDIVIDUAL SOCAL SCHOLASTIC FENCING LEAGUE EVENTS, REGARDLESS OF WEAPON   (FOIL, EPEE, OR SABRE #1 OR #2,  OR THE NOVICE).

EXEMPTION for League Schools - can field teams of fencers for Varsity B,  JV, or  middle school, who have not fenced in either Individual events  or  Novice, as long as they abide by Varsity A rule, as outlined in  "Team  Level Descriptions" below (meaning they must have competed in one  of the  individual events).  Note:  This exemption does NOT apply to  Varsity A  teams, only to Varsity B, JV, and middle school.

TEAM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS:

Middle School - For 6th to 8th grade fencers. (Schools can form as many  Middle School Teams as desired.  Middle school students may not fence on  high school teams.)

Varsity A Team – Top 4 Fencers in High School (9th-12th grade). Each  School can form one Varsity A Team. Essentially, this is your TOP 3-4  fencers. All Varsity A High School Fencers must have fenced in either/or  both the #1 or #2 Individual Events to be considered for a High School  Varsity "A" Team for the SoCal Scholastic League Team Tournament. (Only  one Varsity A Team per school)

Varsity B Team – Junior or Senior (11th/12th grade) fencers with  competition  experience, but not at Varsity A Level. Freshman and  Sophomore fencers  with more than 2 years experience are eligible.  Fencers with A, B, or C ratings are not allowed to fence in this event  (Division 3 = D rating  and below). (Schools can form as many Varsity B  teams.)

Junior Varsity (JV) Team – For UNRATED fencers who are Freshmen and  Sophomores  (9th /10th) with 1 to 2 years competitive experience or  Juniors/Seniors  (11th/12th) with little with 1 to 2 years competitive  experience.  Fencers with A, B, or C ratings are not allowed to fence in  this event  (Division 3 = D rating and below). (Schools can form as  many JV Teams.)

In  the event of more than four fencers from a team having a rating of   'A''B' or 'C' then the lowest rated fencer may have a waiver to fence in   Var B.
Any variance -- the  coach can request an exception for a rated fencer  to fence down a level  with petition approved by coaches present at the  Team Tournament.
Variance only applies to League Schools.
